Setup for Google Analytics

Initial Setup for a Google Analytics View

The configuration of Rich Annotations for Google Analytics Views is pretty much self-explanatory.

  • During this process, you can cancel at any time simply by clicking outside the setup dialog;
  • Once configured, you can always come back and change your preferences for the current GA View.

Keep in Mind

  • Each Google Analytics View can be associated to a Trello Board and List;
  • Multiple GA Views can use the same Trello Board and List, even if from different GA Accounts;
  • You can reassign a GA View already associated to a Board or List at any time without losing any annotation;
  • Each GA View can optionally show Holidays for a specific country, and official or unconfirmed Google algorithm updates - those two features i FREE!;
  • Once in Trello, annotations are yours and can be managed in whichever way you want, including using Trello Power-Ups.

Step 1: Get Going!

To add annotations in Google Analytics, simply click on the report timeline where you want to add an annotation. The first time you do this, it will initiate the setup procedure below.

Step 2: Authorize Trello

You must grant access to your Trello account so Da Vinci Tools knows where to store new annotations and retrieve existing ones;

  • Click the Authorize button to bring the Trello authentication dialog,
  • Click the link to create a new Trello account.
  • Click the "Skip" button if you do not want to use Trello and skip directly to Step 4: Holidays

    Authorize Trello or create a new account

Step 3: Associate a Trello Board

Da Vinci Tools needs to know where to retrieve annotations from, so in the second step you need to pick the Trello Board you want to associate with the current GA View.

  • Either pick an existing Trello Board
  • Let Da Vinci Tools create a new Board for you (you will be prompted for the Board name)

Step 4: Associate a Trello List

The Trello List is where Da Vinci Tools will create new annotations for you

  • Either pick an existing Trello List
  • Ask Da Vinci Tools to create a new one for you. In this case, you will be asked for the List name.

Note: if you asked Da Vinci Tools to create a Board for you, it will automatically create three lists: To Do, Doing, Done - which are typically the default lists to easily get going.

    Step 5: Show Holidays?

    We know holidays can significantly impact your data. In this step, you can pick the country of reference for this View;

    • Either pick a country
    • Leave it to "Do not show holidays"

    Step 6: Google Algorithm Updates

    Google conducts thousands of changes to its search algorithm - some of them are confirmed by Google through their SearchLiaison Twitter account, while some others are unconfirmed and detected by specialized websites such as Search Engine Land, Search Engine Journal or SEMRush. This information is curated by Context.

    • Check the box if you want to see Confirmed Google algorithm updates from SearchLiaison;
    • Check the other box if you want to see Unconfirmed Google algorithm updates based on the findings from specialized websites.

    You Are All Set!

    The required settings are set - you are now ready to create your first Annotation (Card)

      Clearing the Setup

      • To modify or remove the setup for a given Google Analytics view, click on the timeline as if you wanted to create a new annotation, and then click the gear icon in the top right. This will bring the Setup dialog as we've seen above.
      • Click the "deauthorize Trello" to remove all setups for the current view.
        • Rest assured: this only remove the setup and association for the current view - you will NOT lose any of your Trello cards.

      Master Feature Switch and Clearing ALL Setup

      • As with all Da Vinci Tools features, the Options dialog lets you enable or disable this feature globally;

      • For convenience, there's also a Authorize/Deauthorize Trello button.
        • If you deauthorize Trello from the Options dialog, it will remove ALL setups and configuration for all Google Analytics Views. Again, rest assured: this will NOT delete any information from Trello, it simply removes the association of Google Analytics Views with Trello Board & List, as well as holidays and Google algorithm updates setup.
