Timeline, Overview and Adding Cards to Google Analytics

The Timeline

The timeline is available whenever a report shows a time-series such as the one below.

If you want to add a new annotation, simply click the lite-blue area vertically aligned with the date you want. The first time, it will initiate the setup process, and afterward, you will be brought to the Adding a New Annotation flow presented below.

  • Notice the blue comment icons at the bottom of the graph - just like regular annotations, except they are rich ones;
    • Note: By default, any new card created in Trello will use the current date & time for the card creation timestamp - the only way to circumvent this if you want to create an entry in the past or future is to use the Due Date field. Da Vinci Tools will do this automatically for you when creating a new annotation from its interface. When retrieving the data to display on the timeline, Da Vinci will use the Due Date first, and if not present, default to the card creation date.

Annotations Overview

  • When you mouse-over one of those icons, a tooltip dialog will reveal some details about the annotation. Here are some examples.
    • An Unconfirmed Google Search Algorithm update happened on May 22nd. This information is retrieved from Twitter's SearchLiaison feed and curated by the good folks at Context.
    • An official Google algorithm update published on June 2nd - this information doesn't come from a Trello Card, but from a curated source.
    • This view is configured to show United-States holidays - this information doesn't come from a Trello Card, but from a holidays API
    • A single date can have multiple cards. This one shows two cards related to June 4th

Annotations Details

  • Notice how the icon on the left indicates the source of information: holiday, a Google algorithm update, or a Trello card;
  • When an overview is open, the "open link" icon indicates you can click anywhere in this abstract to get more details.
  • In the case of Algorithm Updates, it will bring you to the specific articles talking about this update, while those entries with a Trello icon will open this Card in Trello

Adding a New Annotation

  • Creating a new annotation is super easy - just click in the graph near the date for which you want to add a new annotation;
  • The dialog will provide the date based on where you clicked, but you can change it;
  • Simply give the new annotation a title, and click the "Add Card" button;
  • When create a new annotation, the URL of the current report is automatically assigned as a source attachment, so you can easily get back to this report directly from the Trello Card.
  • A new dialog will open where you will get the full card editing interface of Trello, so you can make the necessary adjustments, such as adding labels, assigning the card to another team member, adding attachments, etc.
    • Notice Da Vinci Tools use the "Due Date" field of the card to indicate when this card was created, otherwise, Trello always uses today's timestamp as the card creation date.

  • When you are done, simply close this dialog and if the date is within the time range of the current report, it will be shown accordingly.

Changing the Setup for the Current View

  • If ever you want to change the Board and List associated to the current view, display or hide holidays, or change the Google algorithm information displayed on your timeline, simply click on the gear icon in the top-right of the Add Card dialog. This will bring back the initial Setup dialog.
    • Remember you can cancel any time simply by clicking outside the dialog;

  • If ever you want to "deauthorize Trello" and remove all setups for the current view, simply click on the "Deauthorize" button in the setup dialog.
    • Rest assured: this only remove the setup and association for the current view - you will NOT lose any of your Trello cards.
